The Yorkshire Dales

The Focus team headed this year to the small village of Giggleswick, close to Settle and nestled in the Yorkshire Dales. We arrived in snow, but this quickly melted and we enjoyed a mix of sunshine, rain and fog.

The location had been chosen as it gave us access to industrial towns of Bradford, Halifax, Keithley and Nelson and the seaside resort of Morecambe.  The beautiful Yorkshire Dales were on our doorstep.

The woolen industry had made this area wealthy. The  damp climate was perfect, and soft water and coal were plentiful.  Workers moved into the area, and as the number of mills grew, additional workforce came from Asia.

Sadly during the latter part of the 20th century, the industry faced competition from coutries such as Turkey, Cambodia, India and Pakistan. Here the cost of labour was a fraction of that in the UK. One by one the  mills closed, and with them the associated  factories and services associated with the industry.
